We, Pig Country 2012

Creative research about the identity of West Flanders

The Province of West Flanders, 3 arts centres and 11 cities and municipalities suggested a travelling project about the identity in West Flanders in Spring 2012.

With the appealing title ‘We, Pig Country – the memory, the desire and the being’, theatre maker Lucas De Man and film director Gilles Coulier went on a creative quest for the idenity in West Flanders in Autumn 2012. With a theatre performance, a short film and a huge multimedial pig they toured around 8 West Flemish municipalities (Meulebeke, Kortemark, De Panne, Poperinge, Diksmuide, Menen, Zonnebeke, Tielt) from August 31st until October 28th 2012. The circus stayed in each city or town for a weekend.

Each community then created their own artistic public installation, departing from the iconic image of the pig, and provided fitting extracurricular activities for the large audiences during the whole weekend. As an apotheosis the circus, including all the creations from the different cities and municipalities, travelled to the cities of Kortrijk (9-11 November), Oostende (16-18 November) and Bruges (23-25 November)

With over 230 partners, over 20.000 visitors and over 30 media reports this is the biggest project New Heroes has realized so far. If you’re interested in what happened exactly at what time, and want to see photos of the project, you can visit the project’s website: www.wijvarkenland.be.

Continuation of the project

Because of its great succes the film and solo will continue running as separate projects in 2013, 2014 and 2015. For the film visit Gilles Coulier’s website www.watchandbehave.be. The short film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival 2013!
