“Daring to look radically again at designing and building a home”, that is how the pioneers from the world of circular and biobased construction set to work. During Dutch Design Week 2020 they will present “The Exploded View”. A detached house that has been rebuilt using circular methods and biobased materials. This unique project shows the existing and future possibilities of sustainable building and living. Dutch Design Week is organized from 17 to 25 October 2020 and can be viewed online via www.ddw.nl.
The Exploded View is the representation of a multi-year research program of “The Embassy of Circular and Biobased Building” in which designers, entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers and storytellers, work together. The Embassy actively asks itself the question: which climate and people-friendly solutions can be found and realized for the enormous construction task facing the Netherlands? They formulate and materialize their answers themselves in a “live research” and “storytel” installation. “In the model and on a life-size blueprint we show what we have discovered, but also show what we don’t know yet. We discuss the qualities of biobased materials and circular methodologies and indicate where the growth opportunities lie. And we invite everyone to think and act with us. Because there is so much knowledge and there is no right method or solution for sustainable building and living, ”says designer Pascal Leboucq of Biobased Creations.
Potential of rapidly renewable raw materials
The installation incorporates applications and materials of today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Products that already exist but still have difficulty finding their way to the construction site to developments that still need serious support to develop and scale up.
The Exploded View thus refers to the endless, potential material flows that are in stock and are not or hardly used in the construction world. “More and more building materials are being made from food waste, textiles, sewage water, buildings or even our own living environment. We demonstrate our search for materials that can keep the production circle as small and efficient as possible, ”says Leboucq.
Need for other models
We also show our quest for the future of housing. Together with the visitor, we wonder how we will live in the near future. “What if we really want to make a transition to a circular and biobased world, then we have to do more than just build differently. Then we also have to rethink how we live and how we add value to our homes. ” says Lucas De Man of Biobased Creations.
Designers and entrepreneurs work together
For at least two years, designers and pioneers from the world of circular and biobased construction work on new perspectives for a more sustainable design, construction and living environment. This so-called Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building is part of World Design Embassies – a program of the Dutch Design Foundation. Biobased Creations, currently curator of the Embassy, is also the initiator and designer of The Growing Pavilion. A pavilion made of experimental biobased materials that attracted more than 75,000 visitors during Dutch Design Week 2019, as part of this Embassy, and is currently nominated for several international awards, including The Dezeen Awards. This iconic pavilion is now the example of CO2 negative construction at Floriade Preview in Almere.

Ongoing research
Dutch Design Week is an important milestone for us, but not the final destination. Our research into the possibilities of biobased and circular design, construction, and living will continue long afterward. With The Exploded View, we will be traveling to various construction fairs and design festivals. Through this dialogue, we are actively searching for answers to a broad range of questions: what are the qualities of biobased materials in relation to health? What options do circular methodologies offer for current and for future construction? What impact will the housing needs of the tomorrow have on modular construction? How can smart design contribute to better detachability and reuse of materials? And what are the business models that could make this new way of building and living possible?
